The security situation in the Strait of Hormuz has deteriorated further after two tankers managed by Greek shipping company Dynacom Tankers<\/strong> were struck by projectiles while transiting near the coast of Oman, highlighting the growing risks faced by commercial shipping amid escalating military tensions between the United States and Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Dynacom Tankers, the Malta-flagged Panamax tanker Kavomaleas<\/em><\/strong> was hit by two projectiles of unknown origin<\/strong> while sailing approximately 8 nautical miles northwest of Kumzar, Oman<\/strong>. The impact triggered a serious engine room fire<\/strong>, forcing the crew to activate the vessel’s fixed fire suppression system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the fire spreading and onboard safety becoming a concern, the vessel’s master ordered the abandonment of the ship<\/strong>. Omani authorities successfully rescued all crew members and transported them safely ashore. The company confirmed that every seafarer was accounted for and that it remains in close coordination with regional authorities overseeing the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the attack, Kavomaleas<\/strong> had been scheduled to load oil products in the Arabian Gulf later this week, making the incident another disruption to regional energy transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO)<\/strong> also confirmed that the tanker had caught fire but reported no signs of marine pollution or environmental damage<\/strong> following the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a separate but related development, Dynacom Tankers announced that its Liberian-flagged Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) Acheloos<\/em><\/strong> was also struck by a projectile on the same day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike Kavomaleas<\/em>, Acheloos<\/em> did not suffer a major fire. The vessel proceeded safely to an anchorage where technical assessments are now underway. Dynacom confirmed that all crew members remain safe<\/strong>, with no injuries or pollution reported<\/strong>. The VLCC has the capacity to transport approximately two million barrels of crude oil<\/strong>, underlining the potential significance had the damage been more severe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greek maritime security firm Marisks<\/strong> reported that both vessels were struck at nearly the same time<\/strong> while sailing through the U.S.-facilitated southern transit corridor<\/strong> in the Strait of Hormuz, a route increasingly being used by commercial vessels to reduce exposure to regional threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incidents occurred against the backdrop of renewed conflict between the United States and Iran. As military tensions intensify, Iran has increasingly targeted shipping movements while the United States continues efforts to enforce restrictions on Iranian maritime trade, creating one of the most volatile operating environments the region has witnessed in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adding to the uncertainty, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)<\/strong> claimed that two oil tankers had “exploded” and become immobilised<\/strong> after using what it described as an unsafe southern route through the Strait of Hormuz. A day earlier, Iranian authorities had also referred to another maritime “accident” involving two vessels in the same area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At present, authorities have not confirmed whether the Iranian claims are directly connected to the projectile strikes on Kavomaleas<\/em> and Acheloos<\/em><\/strong>. Investigations remain ongoing as regional maritime agencies continue to monitor the rapidly evolving security situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest attacks once again demonstrate how quickly geopolitical tensions can translate into direct threats to merchant shipping. While both incidents ended without loss of life or environmental pollution, they reinforce the increasing operational risks for vessels navigating one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints, through which a significant portion of global oil exports passes every day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
