Fresh geopolitical tensions have once again placed the Strait of Hormuz<\/strong> at the center of global maritime attention, with conflicting statements from the United States and Iran adding further uncertainty for commercial shipping and energy markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Monday, Donald Trump<\/strong> claimed that the United States has complete control over the Strait of Hormuz<\/strong>, while also asserting that negotiations with Iran were actively continuing. His remarks, posted on Truth Social, directly contradicted statements from Iranian officials and came amid a series of fresh security incidents affecting vessels operating near the strategic waterway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump accused Iran’s leadership of acting in bad faith, alleging that Iranian officials were privately seeking diplomatic engagement while publicly denying any discussions. He stated that additional meetings had already been scheduled and criticized Tehran for presenting a different narrative to the international community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. President also dismissed Iran’s claims regarding control of the Strait of Hormuz, stating that the waterway is effectively controlled by the U.S. Navy<\/strong>, describing it as a “Wall of Steel.” According to Trump, no cargo reaches Iran unless permitted by the United States, while reiterating Washington’s long-standing position that Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Iran swiftly rejected those assertions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei<\/strong> denied that any negotiations with Washington were taking place or even planned. According to Tehran, the only ongoing discussions involve Oman and relate solely to the management of the Strait of Hormuz rather than broader diplomatic negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adding to the conflicting narratives, Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority reaffirmed that commercial transit through the Strait of Hormuz remains suspended<\/strong>, citing continued U.S. military activity in the region. The authority stated that transit requests would only be considered once regional stability is restored, reinforcing Iran’s position that current security conditions do not permit normal shipping operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While political tensions continue to intensify, operational risks for merchant vessels are also increasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, LNG carrier GasLog Shanghai<\/strong> sustained damage while departing the Strait of Hormuz. Its operator confirmed that all crew members remained safe but did not disclose the exact cause or extent of the damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident followed multiple maritime security alerts issued by the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO)<\/strong>. One alert involved an LNG tanker struck by an unidentified projectile, resulting in damage to the engine room and leaving the vessel not under command. Another tanker separately reported an explosion in the surrounding waters but escaped without damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overnight, UKMTO reported yet another security incident after the master of a merchant vessel observed an explosion close to the ship while transiting the region. Fortunately, no injuries or structural damage were reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These repeated incidents highlight the rapidly deteriorating security environment surrounding one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest developments also expose the widening divide between Washington and Tehran over who effectively controls navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. While the Trump administration maintains that U.S. naval forces are safeguarding freedom of navigation and enforcing what it describes as a de facto blockade against Iran, Tehran insists that it retains authority over shipping movements and maintains that commercial passage cannot safely resume under the present security situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the global maritime industry, the consequences remain significant. The Strait of Hormuz handles approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil trade<\/strong>, making any disruption a major concern for shipowners, charterers, insurers and energy markets alike.
