{"id":128,"date":"2026-02-03T13:32:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T13:32:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marinersupdate.com\/blog\/?p=128"},"modified":"2026-02-03T13:32:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T13:32:08","slug":"malaysia-detained-2-oil-tankers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marinersupdate.com\/blog\/malaysia-detained-2-oil-tankers\/","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia detained 2 oil tankers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>MMEA Detains Two Tankers for Suspected Illegal STS Oil Transfer off Penang<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Penang detained two tankers on <strong>29 January<\/strong> for suspected <strong>illegal ship-to-ship  oil transfer<\/strong> operations about <strong>24 nautical miles west of Muka Head, Penang<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <strong>MMEA Penang Director Captain Muhammad Suffi Mohd Ramli<\/strong>, the vessels were detected at around <strong>1:00 a.m.<\/strong> after a patrol boat received a report of suspicious anchoring. An inspection found both tankers positioned side by side, believed to be conducting unauthorized STS activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The operation involved <strong>53 crew members<\/strong> of multiple nationalities, including <strong>China, Myanmar, Iran, Pakistan, and India<\/strong>. Authorities estimated the value of the seized crude oil at <strong>over RM512 million (\u2248 USD 118 million)<\/strong>, with the combined value of the two tankers at <strong>around RM718 million (\u2248 USD 165 million)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The case is being investigated under the <strong>Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952<\/strong>, covering <strong>unauthorized anchoring and illegal STS transfers<\/strong>, which carry fines of up to <strong>RM200,000 per vessel<\/strong>.
