For mariners, the main concern is not only the lightning and thunder, but the <strong>sudden changes in wind, visibility, precipitation and atmospheric conditions<\/strong> that can accompany a storm.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A thunderstorm may develop rapidly and can create difficult conditions for navigation, manoeuvring, pilotage and harbour entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WHAT IS A THUNDERSTORM?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A thunderstorm is a convective weather system associated with <strong>cumulonimbus (CB) clouds<\/strong>, heavy precipitation, lightning and thunder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a vessel, the most significant hazards include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Very heavy rain<\/strong> causing a rapid reduction in visibility, sometimes almost to zero.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sudden squalls<\/strong> with strong and rapidly changing winds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lightning<\/strong>, which can present a risk to the vessel and equipment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Radio interference or static<\/strong>, which may affect communications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficult conditions during <strong>harbour entry or departure<\/strong>, particularly when strong squalls and poor visibility occur.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thunderstorms tend to be more intense when the atmosphere is <strong>warm and humid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CONDITIONS FOR THUNDERSTORM FORMATION<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three basic conditions are important for thunderstorm development:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Cumulonimbus Cloud<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A cumulonimbus cloud must be developing with a cloud base warmer than <strong>0\u00b0C<\/strong> and producing precipitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Strong Atmospheric Instability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lapse rate must be sufficiently steep to support vigorous convection, extending to a considerable height above the cloud base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Abundant Low-Level Moisture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good supply of water vapour near the surface is required. Condensation releases latent heat, which provides additional energy for strong upward motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">OTHER FAVOURABLE FACTORS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thunderstorm development becomes more likely when these conditions are present:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>High surface temperature<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Light surface winds<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Convergence of surface air<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uplift of moist air over mountains<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Frontal uplift, particularly along a <strong>cold front<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strong daytime heating over land<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advection of warm air<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A combination of several of these factors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The important point for a mariner is that <strong>warm, moist and unstable air provides the fuel, while a trigger starts the convection.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HAZARDS TO MARINERS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thunderstorms can produce several hazards within a short period:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Heavy Rain \u2192 Reduced Visibility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rainfall can become intense enough to make visual navigation and pilotage extremely difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sudden Squalls \u2192 Rapid Wind Changes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wind may strengthen suddenly and change direction as the storm passes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lightning \u2192 Risk to Vessel and Equipment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lightning involves extremely powerful electrical discharges. Although a steel ship is generally well earthed through its structure and the surrounding seawater, lightning remains a hazard that should be taken seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Atmospherics \u2192 Communication Problems<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electrical activity associated with thunderstorms can produce radio interference or static.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Harbour Operations \u2192 Increased Risk<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A thunderstorm close to a port can make berthing, unberthing, pilotage and manoeuvring considerably more challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LIGHTNING &amp; THUNDER<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lightning is a massive electrical discharge that can occur:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Within the same cloud<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Between separate clouds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Between a cloud and the earth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thunder is the sound produced by the rapid expansion and contraction of air along the lightning channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ESTIMATING THE DISTANCE<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because light reaches the observer almost instantly, the time between seeing the lightning flash and hearing thunder can be used as a simple estimate of the storm&#8217;s distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Approximate distance:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Miles \u2248 seconds \u00f7 5<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Kilometres \u2248 seconds \u00f7 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if thunder is heard <strong>15 seconds<\/strong> after the flash:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2248 3 miles \/ \u2248 5 km<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is only an approximate indication, but it can help the bridge team assess whether a thunderstorm is approaching or moving away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TYPES OF THUNDERSTORMS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. HEAT THUNDERSTORMS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These develop mainly over land in <strong>warm, humid conditions<\/strong> when strong surface heating produces convection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are commonly observed during <strong>late afternoons or evenings<\/strong> on warm days with light winds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are also common over mountainous islands in tropical regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. COASTAL THUNDERSTORMS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These can occur during any season and at different times of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are associated with moist maritime air being forced to rise as it moves from sea towards land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are generally less severe and may weaken rapidly after moving inland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. FRONTAL THUNDERSTORMS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are associated with weather fronts, particularly <strong>active cold fronts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are more common in temperate regions during winter when frontal depressions are more frequent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strong temperature difference between warm and cold air masses, combined with strong frontal convergence, can produce severe thunderstorms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A THUNDERSTORM PASSES?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The passage of a thunderstorm can be accompanied by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <strong>sudden drop in temperature<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Very heavy, localised precipitation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>strong squall<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rapid changes in wind speed and direction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A sudden change in atmospheric pressure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cold air from higher levels can be brought down towards the surface by falling precipitation. This can produce a sudden change in the conditions experienced by the vessel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the bridge team, this means that <strong>the weather may change dramatically within minutes rather than hours.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A thunderstorm should never be treated simply as rain and lightning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the mariner, it is a <strong>rapidly changing weather event involving wind, visibility, precipitation, pressure and electrical activity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good preparation means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2713 Monitor weather forecasts and warnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2713 Keep a close watch on developing CB clouds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2713 Be alert for sudden wind and visibility changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2713 Consider the impact on navigation, pilotage and harbour operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2713 Take early action rather than waiting for conditions to deteriorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thunderstorms are among the most powerful and rapidly changing weather phenomena encountered at sea.
