{"id":1642,"date":"2026-09-17T06:29:06","date_gmt":"2026-09-17T06:29:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marinersupdate.com\/blog\/?p=1642"},"modified":"2026-09-17T06:29:07","modified_gmt":"2026-09-17T06:29:07","slug":"bridge-equipment-checks-the-master-pilot-exchange-risq-inspection-focus-wk-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marinersupdate.com\/blog\/bridge-equipment-checks-the-master-pilot-exchange-risq-inspection-focus-wk-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Bridge Equipment Checks &amp; the Master\/Pilot Exchange &#8211; RISQ INSPECTION FOCUS \u2013 WK 19"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week&#8217;s inspection focus looks at two bridge-readiness checkpoints that surface repeatedly during vessel inspections: <strong>routine testing of bridge equipment<\/strong> and the <strong>quality of the Master\/Pilot information exchange<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both are simple to get right on paper, yet both can become sources of inspection findings when documentation is inconsistent or the exchange is treated as a formality rather than a safety process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SECTION 3.5<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are records in place showing that routine tests and checks of bridge equipment are being carried out regularly?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daily testing of bridge equipment is one of the most basic safeguards on the bridge, but it is also one of the easiest routines to let become inconsistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inspectors expect to see <strong>clear, dated records<\/strong> showing that these checks are carried out routinely as part of watchkeeping practice \u2014 not only after an incident, during a port call, or ahead of an inspection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Steering and Compass Systems<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Manual steering<\/strong> should be tested at least once per watch, in line with Checklist C2.1 of the Bridge Procedures Guide. This confirms that the backup steering mode is functional and that the OOW is familiar with switching to it when required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gyro and magnetic compass errors<\/strong> should be checked and recorded at least once a watch whenever practicable, so any developing error can be identified early rather than during a critical manoeuvre.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>All compass repeaters<\/strong>, including the repeater at the emergency steering position, should be synchronised and checked regularly. A repeater that has drifted out of sync at the emergency steering position can create a significant risk if conventional steering is lost.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cross-Checking Navigational Information<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Information from electronic navigational equipment should always be <strong>compared and verified against independent sources<\/strong> rather than relied upon in isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A single faulty sensor should never go unnoticed simply because it is the only reference being used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All available positioning systems and sources should be cross-checked against one another, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>GNSS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DGNSS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Satellite communication terminals with integrated GNSS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Terrestrial radio navigation aids<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The objective is to confirm that the vessel&#8217;s positioning information remains <strong>consistent and reliable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Confirming Equipment Is Functioning and Configured Correctly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Checks should go beyond simply confirming that a display is switched on. They should establish that the equipment is functioning correctly and communicating successfully with connected systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key checks include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use of <strong>built-in test facilities<\/strong> and alarm self-test functions to identify faults before they become operational problems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Verification that <strong>configuration settings<\/strong> are in accordance with the SMS and passage plan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confirmation that <strong>operational settings and alarms<\/strong> are correctly configured and checked on the equipment itself and on the BNWAS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"393\" are a recurring inspection finding \u2014 and an easy one to avoid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A simple, consistently completed <strong>daily log covering steering, compass systems, positioning systems, and configuration\/alarm settings<\/strong> provides clear evidence of compliance and gives the bridge team genuine assurance that the equipment will perform when it is needed most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SECTION 3.6<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is the Master\/Pilot information exchange taking place effectively, and is the standard Pilot Card being completed as required?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Master\/Pilot Exchange (MPX)<\/strong> is one of the most safety-critical conversations that takes place on the bridge because it occurs at the beginning of one of the highest-risk phases of the passage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Getting it right is as much about <strong>process and documentation<\/strong> as it is about the quality of the conversation itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recording the Exchange and Transfer of Conn<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following times should be properly recorded:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The time the <strong>MPX is completed<\/strong> by the OOW.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If different, the time of the <strong>transfer of conn between Master and Pilot<\/strong> should be recorded separately.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The time of any <strong>transfer of conn between pilots<\/strong> should also be recorded.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where applicable, the time of the <strong>transfer of conn between the Pilot and Master again<\/strong> on an outbound passage should be recorded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Standard Pilot Card and Engine Readiness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Pilot Card<\/strong> should clearly indicate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Whether a <strong>power limiter<\/strong> is engaged.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The time necessary to override the power limitation system <strong>with the limiter applied<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The time necessary to override the power limitation system <strong>without the limiter applied<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While navigating in pilotage waters, the <strong>main engine should be readily available<\/strong> to respond immediately to the full range of manoeuvring commands outlined in the Pilot Card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There should be no ambiguity about the vessel&#8217;s available response time when a rapid manoeuvre is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Master\/Pilot Exchange Itself<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pilot and Master should exchange information regarding the Pilot&#8217;s intentions, the ship&#8217;s characteristics, and relevant operational factors <strong>as soon as practicable after the Pilot has boarded<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exchange should not be deferred simply because it is more convenient to do so later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For an effective MPX, the <strong>MPX Checklist (Checklist C1.1 of the Bridge Procedures Guide)<\/strong> should be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image exchange should result in clear, effective, <strong>two-way communication<\/strong> covering the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Presentation of a completed <strong>standard Pilot Card<\/strong> (Checklist C1.2 of the Bridge Procedures Guide).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>pilotage plan<\/strong> and the circumstances under which deviation from the plan may be required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any <strong>amendments to the plan<\/strong> that have been agreed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any changes to <strong>Bridge Team responsibilities<\/strong> made before pilotage commences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Updates on <strong>local conditions<\/strong>, including weather, depth of water, tides, and tidal streams.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An update on <strong>current traffic conditions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ship&#8217;s dimensions and manoeuvring information provided through the <strong>Wheelhouse Poster<\/strong> (Checklist C1.3 of the Bridge Procedures Guide).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>manoeuvring booklet<\/strong> containing more detailed information should also be available on the bridge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any unusual <strong>ship handling characteristics, machinery, navigational equipment, or crew limitations<\/strong> that could affect the safe conduct of pilotage and berthing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Berthing arrangements<\/strong>, including the use, characteristics, and number of tugs, mooring boats, mooring arrangements, and other external facilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Contingency plans<\/strong>, including possible abort points in the event of a malfunction or shipboard emergency.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Formal confirmation of the <strong>working language<\/strong> to be used throughout the passage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WHY IT MATTERS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A rushed or incomplete Master\/Pilot exchange removes a key safety barrier during one of the highest-risk phases of a passage \u2014 <strong>pilotage waters, restricted manoeuvring room, and often heavy traffic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treat the <strong>MPX Checklist, Pilot Card, and Wheelhouse Poster<\/strong> as one integrated package rather than three separate paperwork exercises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most
