A detailed inspection revealed multiple violations, including significant underpayment of crew wages, inadequate food provisions, and the absence of free drinking water on board. Due to these deficiencies, the vessel was detained on grounds of being unseaworthy and failing to meet required standards.

Investigations found that crew members had gone unpaid for nearly seven months, with total outstanding wages amounting to AUD 68,994.15.

Following these findings, AMSA has imposed a ban on the vessel, prohibiting it from entering or operating in Australian ports and waters until 4 October 2026, effective immediately.

Greg Witherall, Acting Executive Director of Operations at AMSA, emphasized that this action sends a clear message to the industry. He stated that seafarers are vital to keeping Australia’s supply chains moving and must be compensated fairly and lawfully. He further described underpayment as a form of exploitation and reaffirmed Australia’s zero-tolerance approach toward such practices.

He also warned that vessel bans can have severe financial consequences for operators, potentially resulting in losses of millions due to restricted port access. AMSA, he noted, will continue to take decisive action against vessels that breach MLC obligations.

AMSA is responsible for enforcing the Maritime Labour Convention in Australia under the Navigation Act 2012 and its associated regulations.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has issued a strong warning to maritime employers, stressing that failure to uphold minimum standards for seafarers’ welfare will lead to serious enforcement actions.
