According to Iranian officials, fees linked to navigation support, maritime safety operations, environmental protection, and monitoring systems in the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf, and the Sea of Oman are considered standard operational costs.

The clarification comes after multiple reports claimed that Iran had tightened shipping controls in recent months and required commercial vessels to coordinate movements with Iranian authorities before crossing the waterway.

Sources also indicate that military monitoring in the region has significantly increased following heightened tensions earlier this year.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, handling nearly 20% of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Any disruption, delay, or additional cost imposed on vessels transiting the route can directly impact global energy prices, shipping costs, and international supply chains.

Before regional tensions escalated, approximately 125 to 140 vessels reportedly transited the strait daily. Recent reports suggest that traffic volumes have declined sharply as concerns over security, military activity, and possible regulatory restrictions continue to grow.

Several major shipping nations and energy-importing economies — including India, China, Japan, and South Korea — are closely monitoring developments in the region due to their heavy dependence on Gulf energy supplies.

The issue also drew international attention after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly described any potential tolling mechanism in the Strait of Hormuz as “unacceptable.”

Baghaei further stated that while Iran supports free trade and safe maritime transit, the country also remains concerned about regional security threats and what it described as the “misuse” of the strait for military operations against Iran.

Iran also confirmed that its deputy foreign minister recently visited Oman to discuss establishing a structured maritime transit coordination mechanism between the two countries.

According to Iranian officials, the proposed framework would focus on navigational safety, vessel coordination, and maritime security cooperation in the region.

Adding to these developments, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council last week announced the launch of the “Persian Gulf Strait Authority” (PGSA), a newly established body responsible for overseeing operational matters linked to the Strait of Hormuz.

The authority stated that it would provide real-time operational and maritime updates related to the strategically vital waterway through its official communication channels.

With global shipping markets already facing geopolitical uncertainty, the latest developments in the Strait of Hormuz are expected to remain under close watch by shipowners, charterers, energy traders, and maritime authorities worldwide.

Iran has denied reports that it plans to impose transit tolls on commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, clarifying that its recent maritime initiatives are focused on improving navigational safety rather than collecting passage fees.
