A tragic incident involving a 19-year-old pre-sea cadet at the T.S. Chanakya campus of Indian Maritime University (IMU) in Nerul, Navi Mumbai, has sent shockwaves through the maritime community and raised serious concerns regarding student welfare and mental pressure in marine training institutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The deceased cadet has been identified as Somnath Singh Shivam, a first-year B.Sc Nautical Science student from Bihar. According to police sources, the cadet allegedly fell from the halfway window area of the third floor of the hostel building on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reports state that around 5 a.m., fellow students from the adjacent hostel wing noticed Somnath lying unconscious on the ground floor with severe injuries and bleeding. He was immediately rushed to Dr. D.Y. Patil Hospital in Nerul, where he later succumbed to his injuries during treatment around 8 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the incident, Nerul Police registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to police officials, Somnath was residing in a third-floor hostel room shared with another student. Investigators are currently probing all possible angles, including whether the cadet died due to accidental fall, exam-related stress, or suicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police sources revealed that a notebook recovered from the hostel room reportedly contained certain writings indicating frustration and mental stress. However, officials clarified that there was no direct mention of suicide or allegations against anyone in the note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cadet\u2019s roommate informed investigators that both students had reportedly studied until around 3 a.m. due to ongoing examinations before going to sleep. The roommate later claimed he was shocked to discover Somnath severely injured near the hostel building in the early morning hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities have seized the cadet\u2019s laptop, mobile phone, notebook, and personal belongings as part of the investigation. Police are also expected to examine his communication records and digital activity to understand whom he had been in contact with prior to the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, the cadet\u2019s family has alleged foul play and demanded a fair and transparent investigation into the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Indian Maritime University expressed profound grief over the unfortunate demise of the cadet and stated that the university is fully cooperating with investigating authorities. IMU also urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information or speculation while the inquiry remains ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The university further stated that the safety, welfare, and well-being of students remain its highest priority and confirmed that counseling support has been arranged for students affected by the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
