India has recorded another significant milestone in its quest for energy security with the discovery of natural gas at the Sri Vijayapuram-3 well, located approximately 15 kilometers off the east coast of the Andaman Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Announcing the development, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, stated that the discovery further reinforces the immense hydrocarbon potential of the Andaman Sea and represents another major success in the ongoing offshore exploration campaign in the basin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The natural gas discovery was made at a water depth of around 355 meters. According to the minister, initial production testing conducted at depths exceeding 1,900 meters confirmed the presence of natural gas through continuous flaring, indicating promising reservoir characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Sri Vijayapuram-3 discovery is expected to strengthen India’s efforts to enhance domestic energy production and reduce dependence on imported hydrocarbons. The Andaman offshore region has increasingly attracted attention due to its untapped resource potential and strategic importance within India’s energy exploration plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Oil India Limited is currently carrying out gas sampling and analysis to determine the composition and calorific value of the discovered gas. These assessments will help establish the commercial viability and future development potential of the find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The discovery aligns with the government’s broader strategy under the Samudra Manthan Mission, which aims to accelerate offshore exploration and unlock India’s hydrocarbon reserves. As part of this initiative, several deepwater and ultra-deepwater exploration wells are planned across offshore basins to identify and develop new energy resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Industry experts view the discovery as a positive step toward strengthening India’s long-term energy security while supporting economic growth and industrial development. If commercially viable, the find could contribute significantly to the country’s domestic natural gas supply and further encourage investment in offshore exploration activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
