Since then, safeguarding Russian energy exports has become a key operational priority for the Russian Navy, as the majority of tankers departing Russia’s major export terminals at Primorsk and Ust-Luga must transit the English Channel to reach global markets. Even vessels sailing from Murmansk and the Kola Peninsula increasingly rely on the Channel, making the route strategically vital.

In late June, RFS Admiral Grigorovich was observed conducting a ship-to-ship refueling operation with the Project 304 Amur-class floating repair ship PM-82 near the Galloper Wind Farm, approximately 15 nautical miles off the Suffolk coast. The operation attracted attention because Amur-class vessels are designed primarily as dockside repair workshops rather than replenishment ships, making at-sea refueling an unusual and potentially higher-risk procedure.

The Royal Navy has maintained continuous surveillance of Russian naval activity in the area. Assets involved include the offshore patrol vessel HMS Tyne, the Type 23 frigate HMS Somerset, offshore patrol vessels HMS Severn and HMS Mersey, the Hunt-class minehunter HMS Ledbury, along with naval helicopters tasked with monitoring Russian movements.

Additional Russian vessels, including the Ropucha-class landing ship RFS Aleksander Shabalin and the tanker MV Mikhail Britnev, have also recently transited the Channel, highlighting a sustained increase in Russian naval operations near British waters.

The continued deployment has placed additional operational demands on the Royal Navy, requiring ships and crews to divert from scheduled training exercises, port visits, and maintenance commitments in order to monitor Russian activities around the clock.

Meanwhile, the detained tanker Smyrtos remains anchored off Weymouth while British authorities continue legal proceedings to seize both the vessel’s cargo and associated assets. Reports suggest the proceeds from any future sale could potentially be directed toward supporting Ukraine.

The situation underscores the growing geopolitical significance of the English Channel as sanctions enforcement intensifies and Russia seeks to secure maritime routes critical to its energy exports. It also reflects the increasing role of naval forces in protecting commercial shipping amid evolving international sanctions and maritime security challenges.

Russia has significantly expanded its naval presence in the English Channel, with the Russian Navy deploying warships to escort sanctioned oil and LNG tankers transporting Russian energy exports through one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors.
