The inspector rarely accepted verbal answers alone and almost every discussion ended with requests such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;Show me in your SMS.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Where is the company procedure?&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Show me the PMS record.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Show me the manufacturer&#8217;s recommendation.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Can you demonstrate it now?&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Bridge, Engine and Cargo departments were all inspected in detail. Random crew interviews were carried out throughout the inspection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>BRIDGE<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspector reviewed the Master&#8217;s Standing Orders and questioned bridge officers on situations requiring the Master to be called. The Night Order Book was checked together with voyage instructions, Master&#8217;s voyage approval and passage planning records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Random verification of Deck Log Book entries was carried out and compared with operational records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest alcohol testing records completed before sailing were verified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Navigation publication inventory was checked, followed by random verification of publication editions. Particular attention was given to ensuring Bridge Resource Management (BRM) Volume 1 &amp; 2 had replaced obsolete Bridge Team Management publications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inspector concentrated heavily on passage planning and ECDIS management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Documents reviewed included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Passage Plan Appraisal Checklist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Route Check Checklist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Passage Plan Briefing Record<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Passage Plan Debriefing Record<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UKC Calculation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safety Depth Calculation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safety Contour Calculation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ENC Marking Checklist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Route Check Records<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ECDIS Safety Setting Change Records<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of simply confirming that charts were corrected, the inspector requested officers to demonstrate an actual ENC correction. Weekly Notices to Mariners were opened and officers were asked to locate a recently inserted buoy and confirm that the correction was visible on the ECDIS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Questions were asked regarding Safety Depth, Safety Contour, Guard Zone settings and the basis for selecting each value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Questions were also asked regarding X-Band and S-Band radar characteristics, Speed Log accuracy testing, BNWAS testing, Radar Magnetron running hours, Navigation Light alarms, Aldis Lamp inspection, Compass lighting arrangements and ETA Book maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company procedure for Speed Log accuracy testing was specifically requested together with PMS records and the manufacturer&#8217;s acceptable error limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CARGO CONTROL ROOM<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cargo Control Room inspection focused on operational readiness rather than documentation alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inspector reviewed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cargo Watch Takeover Checklist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comparison Sheets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SSSCL<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cargo Watch Handover procedures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Duty Officer responsibilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watchkeeping arrangements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cargo monitoring records<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Cross-questioning was carried out on watchkeeping responsibilities during normal operations and during off-duty periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CHIEF ENGINEER&#8217;S OFFICE<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The following documents were reviewed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Monthly Defect Reports<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Critical Equipment Register<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Management of Change Register<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oil Record Book Part I<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lubricating Oil Analysis Trend<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Onboard LO Test Records<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bunkering Documentation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engine Power Limitation Documentation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The inspector also questioned the Chief Engineer regarding bunker line pressure testing requirements under company procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ENGINE ROOM<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The engine room inspection started from the lowest platform and continued deck by deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bilges were examined carefully for cleanliness, oil traces and housekeeping standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following alarms were demonstrated during the inspection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bilge Alarm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Main Engine OMD Alarm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Main Engine Fuel Oil Leakage Alarm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Auxiliary Engine Fuel Oil Leakage Alarm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Steering Gear Low Level Alarm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engineers Call Alarm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Incinerator Flame Failure Alarm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>OWS 15 ppm Alarm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The inspector requested operation of both Main Fire Pumps followed by the Emergency Fire Pump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OWS calibration certificate was verified together with overboard sealing arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emergency Bilge Suction arrangements were inspected and the Second Engineer was questioned regarding testing frequency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The ETO was interviewed regarding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Main Switchboard isolation procedures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electrical Permit to Work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fire Detection testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Smoke Detector testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Earth Fault Alarm testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low Insulation Alarm settings for both 220 V and 440 V systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alarm Book entries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Practical explanation of testing procedures was expected rather than theoretical answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>DECK<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The inspector carried out a full walk-around of the main deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Routine deck inspections carried out by officers were discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following records were reviewed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Safety class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cargo pipelines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manifold area<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hose handling crane<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mooring stations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hydraulic systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deck lighting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>General housekeeping<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The inspector expected officers to explain routine deck inspection items together with the corresponding SMS procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>LIFEBOATS AND LSA<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Questions covered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Propeller intervals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ACCOMMODATION<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Accommodation inspection included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fire records<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cook was questioned regarding actions to be taken in the event of a galley fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator
