Despite continuous improvements in safety, accidents and fatalities still occur due to incorrectly rigged pilot ladders, poor maintenance, or a lack of understanding of the safety principles behind established requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To encourage the next generation of maritime professionals to think beyond compliance, <strong>The Nautical Institute<\/strong>, in partnership with the <strong>International Maritime Pilots&#8217; Association (IMPA)<\/strong>, has launched the <strong>2026 Pilot Transfer Student Competition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This competition challenges maritime students and cadets to go beyond simply quoting regulations. Instead, participants are invited to explain the <em>reasoning<\/em> behind pilot transfer safety requirements, helping to build a stronger safety culture throughout the maritime industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Challenge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Select <strong>any three key safety requirements<\/strong> from the IMPA poster <strong>&#8220;Required Pilot Transfer Arrangements&#8221;<\/strong> and explain the rationale behind each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why are spreaders fitted on a pilot ladder?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why is a spreader positioned on the fifth step from the bottom?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why must each spreader be at least <strong>1.8 metres (180 cm)<\/strong> long?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Can Enter?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The competition is open to <strong>all maritime students and cadets<\/strong> undergoing their initial maritime education or training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Enter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Email your entry to <strong><a href=\"mailto:member@nautinst.org\">member@nautinst.org<\/a><\/strong> and include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your Full Name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Email Address<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Telephone Number<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Name of your College, University, or Cadetship Sponsor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Submit your entry in <strong>one<\/strong> of the following formats:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Article<\/strong> \u2013 Maximum 800 words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Poster<\/strong> \u2013 Word or PDF format<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Short Video<\/strong> \u2013 MP4 format, maximum 4 minutes in duration and no larger than 500 MB.
