SOLAS FSS CODE UPDATE – FIRE SAFETY REQUIREMENT FOR RORO, PASSENGER,& CARGO SHIPS

The IMO has introduced significant amendments through MSC.550(108) and MSC.555(108), updating SOLAS Chapter II-2 and the FSS Code to enhance fire safety standards for Ro-Ro, passenger, and cargo ships, effective from 1 January 2026.

These changes are driven by lessons learned from past fire incidents and findings from EMSA’s FIRESAFE studies, which highlighted critical gaps in early detection, fire suppression, and containment, particularly in Ro-Ro and vehicle spaces.

The amendments focus on improving fire detection and alarm systems, strengthening fixed water-based fire-extinguishing arrangements, and enhancing structural protection and ventilation to limit fire spread. New requirements also introduce advanced monitoring solutions, including video surveillance and improved detector technologies, to ensure faster response and better situational awareness onboard.

For Ro-Ro passenger ships, updated standards for weather deck fire-fighting systems and detection arrangements aim to provide full coverage and continuous protection, even under demanding operational conditions.
