Mariner's Update ("we", "us", or "our") is committed to being transparent about how we handle user data. This Privacy Policy explains what information our Android app and website access, collect, use, and share, how we protect it, how long we keep it, and how you can ask us to delete it.
This document is our Privacy Policy for Google Play and for visitors of our website. It is hosted on a public, non-PDF web page and is not an editable document. The company named here is Mariner's Update, which is the operator of the app and website. If the Google Play listing uses a closely related name (for example "Mariners Update"), this policy still applies to that application.

Please use the email addresses above to submit privacy questions. We aim to respond within 30 days.
This policy covers user and device data handled through:
It does not cover independent third-party websites, social networks, or apps that you may open from our content (for example Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Telegram, or YouTube). Those services have their own privacy policies.
The Android app does not offer account registration or sign-in. You can use the app without creating an account. Because there is no in-app account, Google Play's account-deletion requirement for apps that create accounts does not apply. You can still ask us to delete personal information we hold about you, as described in Section 11.
Uninstalling the app from your device stops the app from collecting further data on that device. Some advertising, crash, or notification identifiers held by Google or other processors may persist according to those providers' policies until they expire or are deleted.
We collect only what is needed to operate the app and website, show content, display ads, send optional notifications, fix crashes, and respond when you contact us. We do not sell personal and sensitive user data.
If you use the contact form on our website (including when that form is opened inside the Android app), we collect:
We use this information to reply to your enquiry. Messages are sent to mu@marinersupdate.com.
If you subscribe to a newsletter or similar update (for example seafarer job alerts promoted on the blog), we collect the email address and any other fields you submit for that purpose, and we use it only to send the requested updates until you unsubscribe.
We do not collect payment card details in the app. We do not ask for government ID numbers in the app.
The app needs an internet connection to load blogs and website pages. When you use the app, the following categories of data may be accessed, collected, or processed automatically by us or by SDKs in the app.
| Data type | Examples | Why it is collected | Shared with third parties? |
|---|---|---|---|
| App content activity | Pages and articles you open in the in-app browser; technical request logs such as IP address, date/time, and browser/user-agent string sent to our web servers | To display our blogs and website, keep the service secure, and diagnose loading issues | Our website hosting provider processes this as part of serving the site. We do not sell it. |
| Device or other identifiers | Android Advertising ID; App Set ID; Firebase Installation ID; FCM registration token; Crashlytics installation UUID | Advertising and ad measurement; delivering push notifications; crash diagnostics; fraud prevention and app security | Yes: Google advertising and Firebase services, and other ad partners that Google's ads SDK may use to serve ads |
| Approximate location | Approximate location derived from IP address (not GPS). The app does not request fine or background location permission for navigation or tracking | Advertising, analytics, and fraud prevention used by the ads SDK; serving website content from our host | Yes, with Google advertising services as described in their documentation |
| App interactions | App launches, taps, and ad / video views collected by the ads SDK | To show, measure, and improve ads, and to reduce invalid traffic | Yes, with Google advertising services |
| Crash logs and diagnostics | Stack traces; app state at crash; device metadata such as OS version, model, brand, and form factor; app version; SDK versions | To detect, diagnose, and fix crashes and stability issues (Firebase Crashlytics) | Yes, with Google Firebase |
| Push notification data | FCM token; app version; device metadata needed to deliver a message | To send operational or content notifications you can disable in system settings | Yes, with Google Firebase Cloud Messaging |
We do not collect or link persistent hardware identifiers such as IMEI, IMSI, or SIM serial number to your advertising ID or other personal data. We do not access your contacts, call logs, SMS, microphone, camera, photos, or list of other installed apps.
When you visit marinersupdate.com or the blog (directly or inside the app), our servers and hosting platform may process:
Our site loads fonts from Google Fonts and icons from a public CDN (cdnjs). Those providers may receive your IP address and browser details when the font or icon files are requested. We also link to social networks; if you follow those links, those networks receive information according to their own policies.
We use the information described above to:
We limit use of personal and sensitive user data to these purposes, which are reasonably related to using a free content app and website. We do not use App Set ID for ads personalization or ads measurement, and we do not associate App Set ID with the Android Advertising ID or other personal data for advertising purposes.
We share user data only as needed to operate the app and website, and as described below. We do not sell personal and sensitive user data (we do not exchange it with third parties for monetary consideration).
| Party | Role | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Google LLC and its advertising / Firebase services (including Google Mobile Ads / AdMob, Firebase Crashlytics, and Firebase Cloud Messaging) | Advertising, crash reporting, and push notifications | Advertising ID, App Set ID, IP address / approximate location, app interactions, diagnostics, crash logs, FCM token, Firebase installation identifiers, device metadata |
| Advertising partners used by the Google ads SDK to fill ad requests | Serving and measuring ads | Identifiers and interaction data processed by the ads SDK as described in Google's ads disclosures |
| Hostinger (website hosting) and related site infrastructure | Hosting marinersupdate.com and the blog | Server logs (IP address, pages requested, timestamps) and any form submissions transmitted to our mailbox |
| Email transmission providers used to deliver contact-form messages | Delivering your enquiry to us | Name, email, company, service, and message |
| Professional advisers or authorities | Legal, security, or regulatory requirements | Only as required by law or to protect rights, safety, and the service |
If we transfer the business (merger, acquisition, or asset sale), user data may transfer to the successor with notice where required by law. Service providers may use subprocessors as described in their own terms (for example Google's subprocessors for Firebase and ads).
Google's ads SDK documentation states that it may collect and share IP address, user-product interactions, diagnostic information, and device or account identifiers for advertising, analytics, and fraud prevention, and that this data is encrypted in transit with TLS. Firebase encrypts listed end-user data in transit using HTTPS.
The Android app displays ads through Google advertising services (such as Google AdMob / Google Mobile Ads). Ads help us offer the app at no charge.
For advertising, the SDK may collect and share:
Personalized ads may use your Advertising ID. You can reset or delete the Advertising ID in Android settings (typically Settings > Google > Ads or Settings > Privacy > Ads, depending on the device). You can also review Google's ad settings at adssettings.google.com.
Where privacy law requires consent for personalized advertising (including in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, and Switzerland), we will only use data for personalized ads consistent with the consent you give, including any in-app consent or disclosure screen. You may still see non-personalized ads. Navigating away, tapping outside a dialog, or using Back/Home is not treated as consent.
The app is intended for maritime professionals and other adults. It is not directed at children, and we do not use the app to show personalized ads to children.
If you allow notifications, we use Firebase Cloud Messaging to send messages to your device. That service uses an FCM token, app version, and related Firebase installation data so the message can be delivered to the correct device.
You can turn notifications off at any time in Android settings for the Mariner's Update app, or by uninstalling the app. We do not require notifications to read blogs in the app.
Our website and the in-app WebView may store cookies or similar data:
You can control cookies in your browser. In the Android WebView, clearing the app's storage or uninstalling the app removes locally stored site data on that device. Blocking all cookies may stop some pages from working correctly.
This Cookie Policy disclosure is part of this Privacy Policy. The "Cookie Policy" link in our website footer points to this section.
We handle personal and sensitive user data with reasonable technical and organisational measures, including:
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. If we become aware of a data incident that legally requires notice, we will inform affected users and regulators as required.
Because the app has no user accounts, there is no in-app "delete account" button. You may still request deletion of personal information we control.
Email mu@marinersupdate.com with the subject line "Privacy data deletion request". Include:
We will delete personal data we hold about you, or anonymise it, unless we must retain a limited subset for security, fraud prevention, tax, or other legal reasons. We will tell you if any such retention applies. Freezing or ignoring a request is not how we handle deletion.
Data held only on your device can be removed by clearing the app's storage or uninstalling the app. We cannot delete advertising or crash identifiers stored solely in Google's systems on your behalf beyond what those products allow; we will point you to Google's user controls where that is the case (for example Advertising ID reset).
This deletion request page is the external web resource for privacy deletion related to the app: https://marinersupdate.com/privacy-policy.html#retention.
Mariner's Update provides maritime QHSE, training, and industry information intended for seafarers, operators, and other adults. The app and website are not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 where that is the applicable digital-consent age). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact mu@marinersupdate.com and we will delete it. The app is not designed for the Google Play Families program.
We are established in India. Our hosting provider and Google (ads and Firebase) may process data on servers in other countries, including the United States and other locations where those companies operate. Where we process personal information from the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or Switzerland, we do so in line with applicable data-protection law, including using appropriate transfer safeguards relied on by our processors. If we cannot meet those conditions, we will stop the relevant processing or restore adequate protection, and notify Google's data protection office if that obligation applies to information we received from Google.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict our use of your personal information, to object to certain processing, or to withdraw consent. You may also have a right to lodge a complaint with a data-protection authority.
You can:
If you are a California resident, we do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising as "sale"/"share" is often defined under the CCPA/CPRA, except to the extent that the use of third-party advertising SDKs could be interpreted that way. You can opt out of personalized ads by resetting your Advertising ID and using Google's ad settings. We do not use or disclose sensitive personal information for purposes that require a separate California right-to-limit beyond what is described in this policy.
We may update this Privacy Policy when our app, website, or legal requirements change. The "Last updated" date at the top will change. The current version will always be available at https://marinersupdate.com/privacy-policy.html. If we make material changes to how we handle personal information, we will provide a more prominent notice where required (for example in the app or on the website).
