IMO Approves NOx Code Amendment (MEPC.398(83))

  • New rules for certification of modified marine engines
  • Applies when engines undergo substantial modification or shift to a different NOx Tier
  • Introduces new engine emission test procedures
  • Requires updated engine nameplate if power/speed changes
  • Certification allowed for individual engine or engine group (not family)

  • Minimum 85% load required for test cycle (if achievable)
  • New engine emission test plan approval needed
  • Monitoring of ambient conditions & performance mandatory

Timeline:

  • Deemed accepted: 1 March 2026
  • Entry into force: 1 September 2026
