TECHNICAL CIRCULAR – WK 42 / Fire Detection & Fixed Firefighting System Checks

A fire at sea gives a crew very little time. Early detection and a fixed system that works first time can decide how it ends. But detectors get fouled by dust, oil mist and paint, panels carry unreported faults, and fixed systems can be compromised by corroded pipework, seized valves or release arrangements left in the wrong position. None of it is obvious from a casual walk-round.

This week’s circular is a technical refresher on keeping both ready. Test detectors and call points, review the panel for disabled loops and silenced alarms, and check release stations, cylinders and pipework. Make sure the fire pumps, mains and quick-closing valves work freely. Secure any fixed system before servicing, and after a discharge, nobody enters until the space is ventilated, tested and declared safe.

Fire protection only counts if it works on the day. Test it, record it, and keep it ready.
