Iran has officially established the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), a new regulatory body tasked with overseeing maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most strategically important shipping lanes.
According to Iranian authorities, vessels transiting through the Strait will now be required to comply with directives issued by the PGSA and obtain transit permits before passage.
The move comes amid rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia following recent developments involving Iran, the US, and Israel. The newly formed authority describes itself as the official legal body responsible for managing and coordinating transit operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
Given that a significant portion of global oil and energy trade passes through this narrow corridor, the development could have major implications for international shipping, tanker operations, freight markets, and global energy security.
