German customs authorities have uncovered approximately 1.6 tonnes of cocaine, valued at nearly €30 million, concealed within a shipment of bananas at the Port of Hamburg.
The operation, carried out in coordination with Hamburg police, marks a significant success in the ongoing fight against international drug trafficking. The seizure was led by officers from the Hamburg Customs Investigation Office, following intelligence received from the Hamburg Port Security Center (HSZ).
According to officials, suspicions were raised when one of the shipping containers exhibited irregularities, indicating the possible presence of illicit cargo. A detailed inspection led to the discovery of around 1,600 packages of cocaine hidden within multiple containers originating from Ecuador.
Although the drugs were seized in mid-March, authorities disclosed the operation publicly only on Friday.
Dr. Tino Igelmann, Head of the Customs Criminal Investigation Office, highlighted the importance of the coordinated effort, stating that the joint drug investigation team of customs and police in Hamburg delivered a substantial blow to organized drug crime. He also emphasized the critical role played by the Port Security Center in identifying and preventing international narcotics smuggling.
Officials have not revealed the intended destination of the shipment. Investigations are currently ongoing under the supervision of the Hamburg Public Prosecutor’s Office, with the joint drug investigation group continuing to pursue leads.
