India Launches ‘Sagar Mein Yog’ Digital Wellness Program for Seafarers Through Dedicated LMS Portal

DGMA Makes Sagar Mein Yog (SMY) LMS Course Mandatory for All Indian Seafarers – Complete Within One Year

The Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA), under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India, has officially launched the Sagar Mein Yog (SMY) Learning Management System (LMS)—a nationwide digital wellness initiative aimed at improving the physical, mental, emotional, and professional well-being of Indian seafarers. The platform became operational on 1 July 2026 and is designed to promote long-term wellness, behavioural preparedness, resilience, and safety culture across the maritime industry.

Who Must Complete This Course?

The SMY-LMS course is mandatory for:

✅ All Indian seafarers holding a valid Indian CDC.
✅ All cadets undergoing pre-sea training in DGMA-approved Maritime Training Institutes (MTIs), before passing out.
✅ Shipping companies, RPSL agencies, MTIs, and maritime unions are advised to ensure widespread awareness among seafarers.

Deadline

Every Indian seafarer must complete the course within one year from the issuance of DGS Training Circular No. 33 of 2026.

The course is completely FREE of cost.


What is Sagar Mein Yog (SMY)?

Unlike a conventional training programme, SMY is a holistic wellness initiative developed to enhance the overall quality of life of seafarers.

The programme aligns with:

  • STCW Convention
  • STCW Rules 2014
  • Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006
  • Maritime India Vision 2030
  • Amrit Kal Vision 2047

Its objective is to build healthier, safer, more resilient, and mentally prepared maritime professionals capable of handling the challenges of life at sea.


10 Wellness Modules Included

The LMS consists of approximately 19 hours 14 minutes of self-paced learning covering:

  1. Emotional Wellness
  2. Economic Wellness
  3. Physical Wellness
  4. Occupational Wellness
  5. Social Wellness
  6. Environmental Wellness
  7. Climatic Wellness
  8. Intellectual Wellness
  9. Cultural Wellness
  10. Spiritual Wellness

Each module includes videos, study material, quizzes, assessments, and a final certificate upon successful completion.


Simple Registration Process

The LMS has been designed for easy access.

The basic steps are:

  1. Visit the SMY portal.
  2. Register using your INDoS number and email.
  3. Verify your email.
  4. Complete your profile.
  5. Study all learning modules.
  6. Pass the assessment.
  7. Download your certificate.

The certificate will also be reflected in the DGMA digital ecosystem linked to your INDoS profile for future administrative reference.
