✓ Fire Control Plans on Maltese-registered ships must use IMO-approved graphical symbols in accordance with SOLAS requirements.
✓ Ships constructed before 1 January 2004 may continue using IMO Resolution A.654(16) unless their Fire Control Plans are updated or reissued.
✓ New or revised Fire Control Plans must use the latest graphical symbols specified in IMO Resolution A.952(23).
✓ All Fire Control Plan graphical symbols must be displayed in colour for clear identification.
✓ IMO Resolution A.1116(30) on escape route signs and equipment location markings should be used together with IMO Resolution A.952(23) for new or updated plans.
✓ Malta now accepts ISO 17631 fire control symbols for both Fire Control Plans and onboard equipment markings.
✓ The adoption of ISO 17631, together with ISO 7010 and ISO 24409-1, promotes internationally standardised safety communication.
✓ Using the same ISO symbols on documentation and physical equipment eliminates inconsistencies and improves emergency response.
✓ Revision 2 (22 June 2026) officially introduced the acceptance of ISO 17631 for Fire Control Plans and physical safety markings.
